Facilitated transport

From Molecular Biology Wiki

Contents

Properties of Facilitated transport

Saturable

Transport be saturated (versus passive diffusion which cannot be saturated)

If you increase concentration of substrate, will eventually get saturation.

Due to transport protein confirmation limitations (finite speed of transport) and finite number of transport proteins on cell.

Competitive Inhibition

Facilitated transport undergoes competitive inhibition.

Selectivity

Transporters selectively transport only certain substrate(s)

Selective Inhibition

eg. For Glucose transport - Phlorizin
