Agar plate protocol

Agar plates are useful for the growth of bacteria such as E.coli.

Preparation of Agar Plates for Bacterial Growth

Prepare liquid medium. Just prior to autoclaving, add:

• 1.5g Bacto-agar per 100mLs of Media.

• Allow to cool to 50-55C (warm but not hot to touch)

• Add antibiotics ( and stir in with previously added stir bar - prior to putting them into the autoclave)

• Add enough warm agar to bacterial plates so that they are almost covered ~ 20 mLs per 10 cm plate.
