Using dogs as the experimental model, procedures were carried out to expose the gastric mucosa to bile, pancreatic juice or a mixture of bile and pancreatic juice. Each dog acted as its own control. Strips of mucosa from the whole length of the stomach were used and "Swiss roll" preparations were made. It was found that the maximum degree of gastritis occurred after exposure to both bile and pancreatic juice. Whole thickness patches of gastric mucosa with an intact blood supply were exteriorized on the anterior abdominal wall in a separate study. When these explants, now affected by severe chronic gastritis were reimplanted into the stomach and were in contact with gastric contents, ulceration developed. It was concluded therefore that areas of chronic gastritis were in fact susceptible to ulceration.
