  • Distribution effectiveness of Nirodh: free vs. commercial channels. Abstract Text:

The Indian condom ("Nirodh") has been available since the inception of national family planning activities. Although distribution of the condom has continually been on the increase, its actual use was not known. The Population Centre of Lucknow undertook a study to determine actual utilization and assess methods of increasing use of the condom. 2 districts in Utter Pradesh, 1 urban and 1 rural, were used for the study. In the urban district more condoms were distributed through commercial means, although actual condom use was lower among those distributed commercially rather than free. The rural district used more condoms in the free program and fewer of these were wasted than in the commercial program. Overall wastage of condoms in the 2 districts varied from 25 to 55%. The utilization rate of the condom is higher per couple in the urban area than the rural area. If it is assumed that 6 condoms are needed to supply a month's contraceptive protection, then enough are distributed in the districts to meet the needs of 8.2 and 5.4% of married couples in the urban and rural districts, respectively. If the actual number of condoms used is measured, only 4.0 and 1.9% of the couples in the districts are protected from pregnancy.
