  • Cote d'Ivoire survey includes knowledge of AIDS. Abstract Text:

The 1994 Demographic and Health Survey of Cote d'Ivoire collected data from a nationally representative sample of 2552 men aged 15-59 years and 8099 women aged 15-49. Men and women ideally want families of 6.0 and 5.5 children, respectively. The total fertility rate was found to be 5.7 births per woman. Only 4% and 7% of women interviewed were currently using a modern or traditional method of contraception, respectively. No increase in the level of family planning practice is expected devoid of a reduction in the ideal family size among men and women. Mothers received antenatal care from medical professionals for 83% of births, and for 75% of births, mothers received at least one dose of tetanus toxoid. Medical assistance at delivery is provided for 45% of births. 150 of every 1000 children born alive die before reaching age 5 years, with the highest levels of mortality being in rural areas and among children born to uneducated mothers. 75% of youths aged 12-23 years have received at least one vaccination, but only 41% are fully immunized. 35% of children aged 2-3 years are stunted. Cote d'Ivoire has the highest level of AIDS in West Africa. Although almost everyone in the country is aware of AIDS and most people know that AIDS is transmitted through sexual relations, only 56% of men and 33% of women know that condom use can prevent the transmission of HIV. These findings indicate that much of the population is not receiving adequate information about HIV/AIDS. 43% of women interviewed in the survey reported having had their genitals mutilated.
