Ultrasonic scanning and an immunological pregnancy test (Gravimun) were performed on 107 women between 35-95 days after the last menstrual period. The tests were repeated after 10 and 20 days. Among 66 patients between the 35th and 56th day of amenorrhea, 8 showed positive results of both tests, 38 had negative Gravimun tests and positive ultrasonic tests, and 13 had positive Gravimun tests and negative ultrasonic tests. The number of positive tests increased in the 10 and 20 day control examinations. Where the Gravimun test was negative and the ultrasonic test was positive after 20 days, no case of intact pregnancy was found. Of 46 women for whom pregnancy was diagnosed with the ultrasonic test, 34 delivered healthy children; there were 4 spontaneous abortions. The ultrasonic test was negative in 3 cases, in 2 of which there was a positive Gravimun test. Between the 35th and 95th days of amenorrhea, 27 patients had positive Gravimun test results, while the ultrasonic test showed a disturbed pregnancy. In 4 of these cases, no placental or embryonic structures were present. The ultrasonic technique is more accurate than the immunological test.
