  • Adolescent pregnancy in Africa. Abstract Text:

In Africa women tend to get married at a young age by tradition. In Cameroon girls aged 10-19 were responsible for 31.8% of all deliveries in 1964. The fertility rate was 4.3% for the 10-14 year old age group and 24.8% for those aged 15-19. In a maternity hospital in the capital in 1983 out of a total of 12,100 women who delivered, 3117 (25.7%) women were under 20 and 1271 (10.5%) were under 18. In another hospital in the Ivory Coast 757 (5.5%) women delivering were under 17 out of a total of 13,627. The relative fertility rate of women under 20 declined from 31.8% to 25.7% and for those under 15 from 5.5% to .28% during the period of 1964-83 in Cameroon. Adolescents face more risks during pregnancy: toxemia, anomalies of the pelvic region, difficulties in vaginal delivery and surgery (episiotomy, cesarean section, and hysterectomy) are more frequent among them than among older women. In the capital low birth weight babies (most of them born prematurely) account for 11.6-12.5% of all deliveries; this figure rises to 17.2% for women under 20 and to 20% for females under 18. Perinatal mortality of infants born to adolescents is 13.8%. At a university hospital in the capital 114 of 128 of married women and 90 of 113 single females had children. A study on 99 cases of illegal abortion requiring hospitalization during 1974 to 1975 found that 94% of patients were city dwellers, 80.8% were single, and 50% were under 20. Burkina Faso and Cameroon have started to tackle the problems of adolescent pregnancy by focusing attention on birth control methods, sexual education, and better control of sexuality.
