--Resolution can be defined as the ability to separate and measure the masses of ions of similar, but not identical, molecular mass. Mass resolution is generally expressed as the ration of m/delta m and has historically been defined in two ways.
1.The 10% valley definition, in which a pair of adjacent ion peaks at mass m1 and m2 (in amu or daltons) are resolved so that a valley of 10% is observed between them, relative to the least most abundant ion of the pair (delta m is defined as the main difference between m1 and m2).
2.The full width, half-maximum (FWHM) definition, where the width of an ion at mass m, at 50% relative abundance, is used to define delta m.--
