Default Kansas insect infestation?

I recently came to visit my parents in Minneapolis, KS. Just today we started noticing small grey/black insects. They are approximately 1/4 inch long, some with wings, some without. A majority are climbing as opposed to the 2 we saw flying. They have 1 solid body as opposed to other insects [ants] that have a head, abdomen and thorax. We found over 100 in the birdsead that they keep in the house. They're climbing walls, they ceiling, cabinets, dog food, water, etc. There seems to be no paticular place we can find them. They are EVERYWHERE!!!! My dad keeps a clean house and is trying to vacuum them up with a shop vac as we speak. Does ANYONE know what these insects are and how we can rid the home of them? I have never seen them before. Thank you!
