Postdoctoral Research Positions are available to study heterotrimeric
G protein and two-component regulatory system signaling pathways in
the eukaryotic filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa. The complete
genome sequence is available for this organism (Galagan, Calvo and
Borkovich, et al., Nature 422: 859-868, 2003; Borkovich, Alex and
Yarden, et al., Microbiol. Mol. Biol. Rev. 68: 1-108, 2004) and
genome-wide approaches are underway, including high-throughput gene
deletions, gene annotation and transcriptional profiling analysis.
Neurospora is an ideal model system for G protein-effector
interactions in mammals and for G protein-mediated virulence in animal
and plant fungal pathogens. Our laboratory has demonstrated that G
proteins and G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) regulate growth and
differentiation in Neurospora through both cAMP-dependent and
independent pathways (e.g., Kays and Borkovich, Genetics 166:
1229-1240; Kim and Borkovich, Mol. Microbiol. 52: 1781-1798).
Possible projects include identification of novel effectors,
determination of the relative contributions of multiple G
proteins and GPCRs to the regulatory networks, and
structure-function studies of a G protein subunits. We have
recently initiated a project in the area of two-component
signaling in Neurospora. Possible projects include mutation
and analysis of histidine kinase and response regulator genes,
as well as identification of downstream effector pathways.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Biology
or a related discipline, have recombinant DNA experience and
possess a good command of spoken and written English.
Experience in microbiological techniques and protein
