What is the most probable "cell of origin" of a cancer stem cell? is it from the tumor tissue's stem cell pool, progenitor cells, mature cells, senescent cells etc.

Cancer is a multifactorial disease. In one of my lectures back in University, one of the most probably cell of origin of a cancer stem cell is the actual stem cell itself. It is postulated that stem cells, because of their ability to renew and survive for longer periods of time as compared to normal cells, can gain mutations which throw its replication-active and replication-silent balance off, leading to a cancer stem cell.

Thankyou. I see your answer as one of the possibilities and quite logical. Mutation is a random process and the non stem cell pool is far larger than stem cell population. So non-stem cells seem to my mind a more likely target for a "stemness rendering" mutation. Isnt it?. Please feel free to discuss all your ideas. sincerely RPn
