Default what kind of job can you get studying social science and economics?

I am very interested in this subject but I'm the kind of person that doesn't like to be told what to do. I don't want to work under anyone. I really want to help people I am very good at researching. Now I'm confused about what kind of career should choose. I also have a plan on going back to my country later in life temporarily to open a huge children and women's shelter. I probably would need a lot of money for that. Now can someone plz help me and think of a career that is most suitable for me. thank you.
