I've just done a year in a private industry and I hated it. What it does give you is money and some experience. However industries try to maximise throughput and are less into the R&D side - it is probably different for a developmental company but as a private firm they are still going to be slightly more rigid than a uni lab/research degree.

If you are able to get on a PhD and if that's what you want to do then I'd go for it if you can. In my case I really needed to get more stable where I am in life and also the pleb-work helped me realise that I defiantly want to do research!

Also when you have a job then you need to worry about money and stuff and it can be quite entrapping.
