To make it simple RNA interference is a single strand of RNA. Since for the most part RNA is single stranded unlike the double stranded DNA, an RNA interference is complimentary to a part of an RNA strand. Therefore, when the RNAi attaches itself to part of the RNA it can "silence" the RNA meaning that the portion of RNA that is now double stranded thanks to the attaching of the RNAi can either be inactivated or activated. Therefore, RNAi can also be used for screening RNA similar to antibodies used to screen for certain proteins.
