Default mRNA copy number

What interests one to know the copy number of mRNA in a cell?
What are its implications? Wouldn't we get the same information by quantifying the amount of protein of interest present in the cell? How different is it?
thanx!

Default Re: mRNA copy number

There are many mechanism of post transduction silencing, for instance RNA interference. These mechanisms block the production of protein but the transcription, in other words, the production of mRNA; is still active.

Another reason to study RNA expression is that there are many transcripts than aren't meant to be translated, but their expression is important because they may regulate other cell processes.
