Default Induction of heat shock response in E.coli - aromatic compounds

Dear netters,

I've heard that aromatic compounds, like toluene, is able to induce the
heat shock response in E.coli, but I'm not able to find a reference that
substantiates this claim. Can any of you help me?

Best regards,
Trond Erik

I use ethanol, 3% final concentration. Works fine. (If you had no
specific reason to use an aromatic compound).

Thanks for the reply, Kaj, but I'm really trying to find out more
details around aromatic compound induction of the heat shock response
(why aromatic compounds should induce, what kind of aromatic compounds
that have been tested, the concentration thay have tested them with etc.).
'
Kind regards,
Trond Erik

I seem to remember reading a paper in the early eighties about toluene and
other aromatics and HSPs. At that time the nature of HSP induction and its
relationship to stress and development was begining to re-emerge as the focus.
The induction of HSPs in response to anything that causes stress in the
organism (including ethanol) is quite well understood now.
