Default How does the AHRC work for post-docs?

I am about to finish a doctorate in English lit, and am confused about how the AHRC works with awards for post-doctoral stuff. Do I decide which university I want to go to next and then apply for funding from the AHRC and "spend" it at that uni, or do I apply through the university? I've looked at the AHRC website, which is as clear as mud.
