Default Electricity and magnetism?

I get how a changing current (AC) produces a changing magnetic field & how a current is induced when a conductor & magnetic field are moving in relation to one another, but I think I've confused myself concerning DC & magnetism. Do you have to have AC to produce a magnetic field, or can DC produce a 'stable' magnet. I think I'm getting confused over the fact that conductors & magnetic fields need to be moving to produce a current...
