If a force of 2 N is needed to open an 89 cm wide door when applied at the edge opposite the hinges, what force must be applied to open the door if you push against the door 9 cm from the hinged side? Please help! I get the feeling this problem is pretty simple, but I haven't figured it out. Looking for correct numerical answer and a short, easy-to-follow explanation. Thank you so much!!!

for the turning moments to be equal 2*89=X*9 thus X=2*89/9

You are looking at the total moment to move the door - that is force x perpendicular distance . 2N x 89 = 179Ncm so this same moment must be at 9cm 9 x N = 179 N = 179/9 = 19.89N
