Default Candle visible distance?

Hello
My brother and I are at odds over what distance, either in reality or
theoretically, that the flame of a single candle is visible at night (or
complete darkness).
Now, I would have to say that this would mean with no secondary light
sources to distract the 'viewer'.
Anyone with an idea of evidence of this distance, the info would be GREATLY
appreciated.

"How far away can you see a candle flame in the dark?"

.... 50 miles for a flickering candle flame

And it'd depend on the clarity of the air as well. Near the ocean, the
humidity might shorten this distance.
