There is no *horizontal* component of weight.

On an inclined plane there *is* a component of weight that is _parallel to
the surface_, which will act to impel the sled along the surface. There is
also a *normal* component of weight that will press it against the surface.

If the plane is *inclined,* then the surface is _not_ horizontal.

You're getting closer! No component of the car's weight acts in the
horizontal direction; the weight of course acts purely downwards. A
component of the - normal force - acts horizontally. The normal force is
numerically equal to the weight if the car is on a horizontal surface, but
is unequal to it on a banked surface - in fact the normal force will exceed
the weight in this case.

NASA site on centrifugal force and realised that that was exactly the
viewpoint i argued to my school physics teacher all those years ago.

with that understanding i can go back and do the maths and it will now
make sense. especially when using the rotating reference frame.
