| > A potentiometer is simply a resistor that has its resistive element exposed and touched by a slider of some kind. If a voltage is imposed across the 'pot' the slider can be adjusted to select some fraction of that voltage Suppose the total resistance of the 'pot' is 1000 ohms, and the slider is positioned so it's 300 ohms from the bottom. Since correct usage of a pot is such that there's very little current taken from the slider the voltage the slider sees is V(slider) = V(total) * 300 / 1000. It's fairly simple to calculate voltage even if there is a curent load taken from the slider if you know how to calulate voltages in resistive networks. |
