A dongle is a security device that is connected to a parallel port in order to prevent piracy, without a dongle the program wont work. Do you know if this program works without a dongle?

1. Hybaid MBS cycler;
2. Installed MBS software;
3. single port PCI RS485 card in a desktop computer or Brain Boxes PCMCIA RS485 card in a laptop computer
4. RS485 cable (?)
5. A dongle that goes onto parallel port (if the program is not made to work without a dongle).

Tell me if I'm wrong.

I've just got a Hybaid MBS 0.2S thermocycler. I've downloaded the software but as reported above it wont run without the software protection dongle. Does anyone know where to source the software with the appropriate dongle?
It's frustrating to have the machine the operating software but unable to run it - it's basically junk at the moment.

You are right. Hybaid MBS cycler by itself is a peace of metal without the dongle.
It's not a problem to get RS485 card. Even the software is not enough.
You can find a lot of very cheap Hybaid MBS cycler of eBay, for example. I got it for $9.00 but I had to sell it because the dongle.
Actually, it's a pretty standard way for Hybaid, Thermo and other companies to protect their interest. It's almost impossible to get the dongle from recycling/surplus companies. They get big peaces of equipment but not small parts or software.

One of the cheapest "standard" 96-well 0.2mL cyclers with hot lead is PE 9600:

It costs ~$100 with local pickup.
