| Can anyone tell me how stable this diol is or would be if it existed. My feeling is that it would change to an aldehyde and water. |

| You are correct. Most likely it would loose a water molecule to form the aldehyde. This type of molecule is also called a geminal diol. Geminal diols can loose a water molecule easily to form the aldehyde. |
