Unhappy Ethan 1,1 diol

Can anyone tell me how stable this diol is or would be if it existed. My feeling is that it would change to an aldehyde and water.

Default Re: Ethan 1,1 diol

You are correct. Most likely it would loose a water molecule to form the aldehyde. This type of molecule is also called a geminal diol. Geminal diols can loose a water molecule easily to form the aldehyde.
