Dear people, I have this question on whether is it possible to clone these 3 genes which has the antibacterial, antifungal and antivirus activities into a vector and expresses them? I have tried to find journals related to this, but to no avail. Hope you guys can help. Please let me know if it's possible, what are the requirements and how can it be done. It would be better if you can attach the links from where you obtain the information from. Thanks. Cheers!

Hi theoretically it is possible to express all these genes togeather. you can take some peptide antibiotic gene and can express, along with peptide antifungal and a gene for interferon that has antiviral activity. but its really hard to express because these could be toxic for the host in which you want to express these and it will not be suitable because not all peptide antibiotics are broad spectrum and similarly antifungal protein will not be helpful to kill all fungi. i also not come across any article in which somebody tried to express all these genes togeather. good luck for you but its good idea.... best regards aftab

Dear aftabac, First of all, thanks for your reply. Perhaps it was my fault that I did not phrase my questions clearer. I know it is possible to clone and express multiple genes into a vector. But since these three genes has different functions and also different targets, my questions are what host to use? And what about the protein expression? Broad spectrum activity are not necessary, as long as they can act against ONE (antibacterial that targets one bacteria and so on) would be more than enough. Once again, thanks alot!

you are welcome you can use either of the expression system. from E.coli to Mammlian cells, but i think it will be better if you secrete out the product but remember your host should be resistant to that product i.e. if some peptide antibiotic then if you are expressing in E.coli then it must be resistance to that and similarly if you want to express in yeast then the yeast must be resistant to anti-fungal compound. you can carefully design your experiment... good luck for you. regards aftab
