Default Flower Research

Have an interest in the color and scent of flowers. What are the steps required to identify and copy the gene sequences of each? Have read up on the requrements for PCR but what comes before that is gray. Also, I understand that, because of introns, RNA is the preferable form for inquiry.

Hoping to maintain this thread for at least a few exhanges. Much thanks in advance for an informed reply.
