Problem with Sweet silver staining of proteins

Sweet silver staining is a mass spectrometry compatible staining of proteins..Formaldehyde is replaced with galactose in alkaline borate (developing agent)..I need help as the background of the gels stained with this method becomes too dark..please give me some suggestions...
