Question tryptone vs peptone



Hi
what is difference between tryptone and peptone? can they be used in media preparation interchangably, if not, why??

somebody told me that these tryptone and peptone can be used in media preparation interchangably, but i am still waiting for some good reason and answer..........

Hi.

I think peptones are substances obtained after partial hydrolysis of a protein, and tryptone is a peptone formed thru pancreatic digestion involving trypsin. I read it somewhere while learning microbiology. We generally interchange and it works because they are protein hydrolysates in a general aspect.

I used peptone accidentally in my expression screen and I had no expression of my product, however when I switched back to tryptone I got expression. Why did this happen?

i advise you not to switch them, maybe one is poor in one or few of the amino- acid, and some times it might be critical

hmm, my host is a prototroph for all all the amino acids, so any shortage should be easly accounted for.
