Knockout mice for treatments?
What do scientists do with a knockout mouse to research treatments for colon cancer.
Please be detailed if u can or give me a website
Knock-out mice are used in colorectal cancer research.
Knock-out means that the mice have certain genes turned off through a targeted mutation. So because of this all the cells of those mice can't express that gene like it normally would.
In this case APC gene is turned off.
This adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene is classified as a tumor supressor gene. That means it prevents the uncontrolled growth of cells that may result in cancerous tumors.
So these Knock-out mice have a considerably higher risk for colon cancer because the lack of tumor supressor gene in there colon.
I hope this helps.
