Default Function of medium ingredients



Hi folks,

i would like to know the function of the different ingredients in a Medium which are:

-NaHCo3
-Sodium Pyruvate
-FCS
-glutamine

The Sodium Bicarbonate contributes to the osmolality of cell culture media, buffering to compensate for the cellular production of CO2 (as a byproduct of metabolism), maintaining the correct pH level.

L-Glutamine and Sodium pyruvate work together to act as an easily accessible carbohydrate energy source for cells in culture.

FCS, or Foetal Calf Serum, provides growth hormones and other growth factors.
