EMBL

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory, one of the world's top research institutions, is dedicated to basic research in the molecular life sciences. EMBL is funded by public research monies from 20 member states - Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom and an associate member state, Australia.
Advanced Training is one of the core missions of the EMBL since its creation in 1974. Aiming at the promotion of excellence in modern life sciences and providing valuable services to its Member States and the international scientific community, EMBL has build a tradition and extensive expertise in organising and hosting advanced conferences, courses and workshops.

Microtubules conference

Microtubules are of fundamental importance for an extraordinary variety of essential processes in all eukaryotic cells. In the 1980s, advances in light microscopy and the discovery of motor proteins catalyzed the expansion of microtubule cytoskeleton research. In the 1990s the discovery of GFP revolutionized the visualization of dynamic cytoskeletal processes inside cells. Over the years and especially recently due to the advent of proteomics, many nteractors of microtubules have been identified and we are approaching an exciting phase where complete knowledge of the components of the microtubule cytoskeleton appears within reach. Therefore, the focus of microtubule cytoskeleton research is moving from identification of components, their characterization in isolation, the consequences of loss of function for intracellular organization and dynamics towards a truly mechanistic description of the entire microtubule system and its regulation.

To achieve a systems-wide understanding of microtubule cytoskeleton behaviour requires a combination of different disciplines including biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology and mathematical modeling, and to exchange concepts developed in different scientific communities like in cell and developmental biology.

This conference aims at providing an overview of contemporary microtubule cytoskeleton research at all complexity levels, from atomic resolution to entire organisms and will be structured as follows:

(1) Molecules interacting with microtubules;

(2) Complex microtubule arrays and cell architecture;

(3) Microtubules in developmental processes and in differentiated structures.

The main objective of the conference is to bring together established scientists with young researchers from all over the world that have recently made exciting contributions to the microtubule field. The broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research approaches that will be represented will provide a unique platform and create a stimulating atmosphere encouraging not only the exchange of new discoveries, but also of novel emerging concepts beyond the limits of traditional disciplines.

Stem Cells, Tissue Homeostasis and Cancer Conference:

The conference series aims to incorporate basic, translational and clinical aspects of stem cell research into a single framework. The mechanisms that generate and maintain mammalian embryonic and tissue-specific stem cell populations will be discussed, as will the application of this knowledge to regenerative medicine and cancer biology. In particular, the role of induced pluripotentcy and cancer stem cells will be highlighted. Non-mammalian model systems will be included as they provide strong forward genetics, and also opportunities for in vivo pharmacological screening. The goal is to give participants an overview of the model systems and scientific and logistic framework involved in gaining and exploiting basic knowledge of stem cell biology.

Programme

Each session will start with a keynote address, and contain ca. 3 additional featured speakers. In addition, 1-2 short talks will be included in each session, based on selected abstracts. In addition, a full afternoon will be dedicated to poster presentations.

The overall schedule will be:

* Day 1: Welcome, Evening session
* Day 2: Morning session, Posters, Evening session
* Day 3: 3 sessions, followed by dinner with entertainment
* Day 4: morning session

The program will be organised into the following sessions:

* 1. Embryonic Stem Cells and Reprogramming
* 2. Hematopoiesis
* 3. Tissue Stem Cells I. Epithelial stem cells
* 4. Tissue Stem Cells II. Other tissues
* 5. Non-mammalian model systems
Scientific Programming and Data Visualization for Structural Biology Practical Course:
The Practical Course on Scientific Programming and Data Visualization was developed at Harvard where it was offered for the last two years. In 2010, for the first time, it will move to Heidelberg, allowing 45 European students to participate. The course is designed primarily for structural biologists, but scientists from other disciplines are welcome to apply. The goals of the course are to to allow students to learn and master computational skills that are frequently required in less routine projects and to learn methods of data visualization. Joint lecture sessions and three parallel tutorial tracks will be offered: Scientific Programming with Python, OSX Programming and Molecular Visualization with Maya. As part of the course, we ask students to prepare a project proposal that is relevant for their own research area.
This course has 45 places. There will be a two stage application process involving entering your contact data and then a letter of motivation. You should decide at the point of application which group you would like to be part of:

1. Python: As a part of the application, we ask students to prepare a short statement (no more than 2000 characters) detailing the main applications they currently use for their research, the programs they use to process and analyze data, and a proposal for new tools that they would like to develop using Python, which would address an outstanding need.

2. Maya: As a part of the application, we ask students to prepare a short proposal (no more than 2000 characters) that outlines how they would like to use Maya for their scientific research.
