what is h3k4, h3k27?

Hi,

I am new to the world of chromatin. In my readings, I come across terms like H3K4, H3k27, h3k36, but cannot find what they mean. Can someone help me figure this out or suggest a resource? Also, how does one determine where to investigate on the chromatin - is it by Chip-seq?

H3 means the number of histone, and K (or whatever letter is) means the aminoacid. In this case K is for lysine. In other words, H3K4 means histone 3 lysine 4 and so on.

Methylation of histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27) is a posttranslational modification that is highly correlated with genomic silencing.
(It is similar with H3K4 OR K36, I think.)

In this case you can also find terms like H3K9me2 - and the 'me2' means dimethylation Sometimes shortcut 'ac' is also useful (it means acetylation)
