In March 2010, DePuy Orthopaedic Inc. finally acknowledged that the Australian data which indicated a higher-than-normal failure rate of their medical devices.

With this, they announced a worldwide DePuy Hip Replacement Recall. Looking into medical literature, hip replacement surgeries with metal-on-metal components are likely to fail. In extreme cases, complete failure of hip devices happen, resulting in more serious health problems.

The malfunctioning hip devices may create an accumulation of toxic metal into the patient’s bloodstream. This take place when the device is not attached to the bone correctly; the unit is dislocated and misaligned; the bone around the implant is fractured.
