Capillary electrophoresis is an analytical technique that separates charged compounds based on the size and amount of charge, and also on electroosmotic flow. The way it separates is by applying a very high voltage across a capillary so the charged ions can move. DNA in particular is negatively charged (due to phosphate groups attached) so electrophoresis is used to separate different sized chains of DNA to help determine certain genes and other important information.

More often performed as gel electrophoresis, to obtain what we all now recognise as a DNA profile (those little bands of colour), the capilliary version gives a computer read out which makes it easier to compare with other profiles and to store the data.

Capillary Electrophoresis uses current to attract negatively charged DNA through thin capillaries filled with polymer. This technique is most commonly used for genotyping and sequencing analysis.
