This is a fantastic question. There is an old joke that DNA extraction is like playing with test tubes of water. That's because DNA floating around in water is invisible, and looks like the researcher is just pouring clear water from one container to another.

There are several methods, called protocols, for isolating DNA from plants. A google search on plant dna extraction will give you a boatload of protocols. Most require exotic chemicals and lab equipment.

But you can extract DNA from plants in your kitchen using a blender, detergent, meat tenderizer, and rubbing alcohol!

In the case of Cleome, I would use about half a cup of the seed pods. Best of luck!
