| Electrophoresis involves separating DNA fragments based on their size. DNA fragments, which are negatively charged, are placed in a gel like substance and an electric current passed over them. The fragments are attracted to the positive electrode. The smaller fragments move more easily through the gel, where as the larger fragments move more slowly. This can be used to create "DNA profiles" for individuals, useful in legal cases or family issues. It is also used to separate fragments of DNA differing by one base in length. This is used in the mapping of genes. |
