The attached sequence is the coding strand of a double-stranded DNA numbered in units of
10 base pairs, 1-490. The sequence contains a mammalian gene that is transcribed by RNA polymerase
II. The gene encodes a small peptide. The sequence contains two exons and one intron, as well as 5’
and 3’ untranslated regions (UTRs).
1. Write the number of the base pair where transcription is most likely to start. That is, which
base pair encodes +1 of the transcript: _________.
2. Write the numbers of the base pairs that encode the first nucleotide and the last nucleotide
of the first exon:
