I think that if viruses aren't classified as "alive", then the problem is that the word "alive" is poorly defined. There are lots of symbiotic and parasitic organisms that can't survive on their own, so from a philosophical perspective I'd say that a virus should be considered just as "alive" as any other parasite.

Good point. My knowledge of virology is limited to the ones I've used for research, which are all retroviruses.
