28TH PAKISTAN CONGRESS OF ZOOLOGY, GC UNIVERSITY, FAISALABAD

GENERAL INFORMATION
The President of Zoological Society of Pakistan and the Congress Organizing Committee cordially invite the Fellows/ Members of society and all other scientists interested in various disciplines of Zoological Sciences to take part in the 28th Pakistan Congress of Zoology to be held at the GC University, Faisalabad Pakistan on March 18 to 20 March, 2008.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
The scientific programme will consist of plenary lectures and oral presentations. Theme of the congress will cover all the major areas of Zoology and related disciplines e.g. Entomology and Pest Management; Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioremediation, Genetics, Toxicology, Parasitology; Microbiology, Physiology; Palaeontology, Environmental Biology, Wildlife Conservation; Fisheries, Fresh water Biology and Marine Biology.
There will be three sessions each day. The first session will start at 9:00 A.M. The paper reading session will start immediately after inauguration and will continue till the 3rd day.
The participants are reminded that only one paper will be accepted for presentation from one set of authors.
Last date for the receipt of registration forms and abstracts of papers is January 26, 2008.
ABSTRACTS
The participants are requested to submit two copies of abstracts of their research papers. The abstracts should include a brief introduction, methods used, main results and conclusions. Multimedia, 2x2 slide and overhead projectors will be available.
POSTER SESSION
Poster session, as usual, has been arranged specially for the younger scientists. A committee will review the posters and adjudge the first, second and third best posters. The authors of these posters will be given certificates at the Closing Ceremony on the third day of the congress. Participants desirous of presenting poster must, however, register themselves for the congress and submit a short summary by January 26, 2008.
GC UNIVERSITY, FAISALABAD
The journey of GC University Faisalabad started in 1897 as a Municipal Middle School. It was housed in the building of the present Govt. College for Women Karkhana Bazar, Faisalabad, and was upgratded to high school in September 1905. in 1916, the provincial government took over the management of this institution and moved it to the present building. It became intermediate College in 1924 and Degree college in October 1933 and a Postgraduate College in 1963.The college had a great history of excellence. It produced renowned scholars and professionals and attracted distinguished professors to its ranks. The General (Rtd) Khalid Maqbool, Governor of the Punjab, Dr M. Yaqoob, Ex. Governor of State Bank of Pakistan, renowned scientist Dr. Ishfaq Ahmed, Dr. Habib Ullah Jamal, Vice Chancellor University of Engineering and Technology Texila, Air Marshal (Rtd.) Chhabra of Indian Air Force and renowned poet Noon Meem Rashid are some of the Leading figures it has produced. The GC University Faisalabad has emerged as a leading centre of quality education and research in a short span of time. The University has developed strong linkage with all the segments of society. It caters to the needs of the industry and market. The University has also become a hub of Social and cultural activities. The focus of the university is to produce competent professionals equipped with all the communication and managerial skills to lead the market and industry. The university inculcates critical and creative spirit among its students. Some of the disciplines, which recently been initiated include Commerce, Business Administration, Information Technology, Biotechnology, Electrical Engineering etc. The University Senate is the supreme governing / legislative body of the University. The Syndicate is the Executive Body of the University and Academic Council is the main Academic Body of the University. The Governor of the Punjab is the Chancellor of the University, whereas Minister for Education, Government of the Punjab is the Pro- Chancellor of the University.
GOLD MEDALS AWATDING CEREMONIES
The Fifteenth Mujib Memorial Gold Medal will be awarded to a student of Karachi University, standing first in the recent M.Sc. Zoology examination, with specialization in Parasitology.
The fifteenth Muzaffer Ahmad God Medal will be awarded to a student of the Punjab University, standing first in the recent M.Sc. Zoology examination.
The Thirteenth Muhammad Afzal ‘Hussain Qadri Memorial Gold Medal will be awarded to M.S c. Zoology student of University of Karachi obtaining first position.
The Ninth M.A.H Qadri Memorial Gold Medal will be awarded to a student of Karachi University, obtaining Ph.D Zoology degree in Parasitology.
The Eighth Prof. Imtiaz Ahmed Gold Medal will be awarded to a studne of Karachi University, standing first in the recent M.Sc. Zoology examination with specialization in Entomology.
The seventh Ahmed Mohiuddin Memorial Gold Medal will be awarded to a student of University of Sindh, Jamshoro Standing first in the recent M.Sc. Zoology examination.
The Sixth Prof. Dr. S.N.H. Naqvi Gold Medal will be awarded to successful Ph.D. Zoology specializing in the field of Toxicology from University of Karachi.
ZOOLOGIST OF THE YEAR AWARD
The zoological Society of Pakistan will honour its fellow for his / her scientific contributions to the discipline of Zoology. A committee specially constituted for this purpose will select an outstanding Zoologist out of the nominees. Award giving ceremony will be held during the Inaugural session of 28th Pakisan Congress of Zoology. Citation of the award will also be read before conferring the award which is in the form a medal and a certificate.
PROF. A.R. SHAKKORI GOLD MEDAL
The Seventh Professor A.R. Shakoori Gol Medal will be given to a young researcher upto the age of 45 in any area of Biological Sciences. A specially constituted committee will scrutinize the applications received in response to an advertisement. The Medal will be conferred during the Inaugural session of 28th Pakistan Congress of Zoology.
PROF. DR. MIRZA AZHAR BEG GOLD MEDAL
The Eighth Prof. Dr. Mirza Azhar Beg Gold Medal will be given to a young researcher upto the age of 45 in Ecology / Wildlife / Vertebrate Pest Management / Taxonomy / Fisheries. A specially constituted committee will scrutinize the applications received in response to an advertisement. The medal will be conferred during the Inaugural session of 28th Pakistan Congress of Zoology.
PROF. DR. NASIMA TIRMIZI GOLD MEDAL
The fifth Prof. Dr. Nasima M. Tirmizi Gold Medal will be given to a researcher in the field of Marine Sciences. A specially constituted committee will scrutinize the applications received in response to an advertisement. The Medal will be conferred during the Inaugural session of 28th Pakistan Congress of Zoology.
ACCOMMODATION, BOARD AND TRAVEL
The participants requesting for accommodation should inform the secretariat well in time. All participants should inform about the details of their arrival in Faisalabad well in time, so that arrangements for their transport from the Railway Station / Air Port / Bus Terminal Could be made.
The participants may have to pay meals if they are not sponsored.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR POSTER PRESENTATIONS
Abstracts scheduled for presentation in poster sessions will be grouped by topic, numbered and listed in the programme, and published in the abstract book in the usual manner. In addition, programme listings will specify time when your colleagues may expect you to be at your assigned space to discuss your work.
Mount posters on your assigned board in the evening of Marc h17, 2008, i.e. one day before the inauguration of the Congress. Posters should be in place for the full congress period.
The poster board surface is 3`8`` high and 5`6`` wide. Prepare for the top of your poster space a label indicating its title and authors. The lettering for this section should not be less than 1`` high. A copy of your abstract types in large type should be posted in the upper left-hand corner of the poster board.
All illustration should be made before hand. Keep in mind that your illustrations must be read by interested scientists from distances of about 3` or more. Charts, drawings and illustrations might well be similar to those you would otherwise use in making slides; preferably cruder and more heavily drawn. They need not, in fact should not, be “arty”. Simple use of color can add emphasis effectively. Do not mount them on heavy board because these may be difficult to keep in position on the poster boards. Hand lettered material should contain appropriately heavy lettering at least 3/8`` high. Shade block letters where possible. Typed material should be typed on a Bulletin (large type) typewriter, if possible. Keep illustrative material; simple.
Bring your own push-pins or thumbtacks.

Faisalabad formerly known as Lyallpur is industrial hub of Punjab Province and is specifically known for its textile industry. It is located about 90 Km in the southwest of Punjab metropolis, Lahore and is well connected with all the major cities of Pakistan, through motorway, highway, rail, and air. This is the third biggest Agriculture University in the South Asia is located close to the old city, which is marked by a central clock tower with 8 radiating bazaars. Besides GC University, the Faisalabad city has a Medical Colleges, National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Nuclear Institute of Agriculture & Biology, Ayab Agriculture Research Centre, a wildlife Park at Gatwala, besides a couple of private Universities and Medical Colleges. The weather of Faisalabad during March is warm with average temperature of 28-30 ºC.
