| Dear all, regards.I am a research scholar from IIT, India and presently helping out my boss in procuring a GC MS/MS for plant terpenoid(C15 H24 module molecules ) /phenolic (whole range of those ) analysis as well as metabolomics analysis. After screening for costs and features, we have finally landed inot 2 GC MSMSM giants Thermo and Varian, and is presently difficult to choose from.Kindly suggest me .The features are as follows . 1. ITQ 1100TM Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer system includes EI Source, 250 L/sec Turbo-Molecular pump, MSn, Computer and Software-X-CALIBUR (230V),interface temperature has a maximum of 350 °C ,- Optimally designed to eliminate ion-molecule reaction, EI and optional CI source with exchangeable ion volumes, maximizing performance in EI, positive ion CI, and negative ion CI, Electron beam collimating magnets provide highest ionization efficiency, heating from 125 °C to 300 °C for stable operation and superior chromatographic integrity, Electron energy adjustable between 0 and 130 eV and emission current upto 850 µA ,Run time diagnostics,Hot splitless injection of 1 pg octafluoronaphthalene (OFN) in isooctane produces a signal to noise of 100:1 for m/z 272 in full scan., MS (n = 5) modes of mass analysis,Unit mass resolution throughout the mass range of 10 – 1100 amu, Scan rate of 5,555 amu/sec,TR-5 MS 30 meters X 0.25 mm ID fused silica capillary column Film thickness 0.25 micron, NIST 05 library (190,825 spectra) , 2. GC-MS Model 4000, Includes CP-3800 GC,Automatic EI/CI switch: available, Mass Range: 10-1000 Da, Scan Speed: 5000/10000 u/S Mass resolution: unit Mass, Vacum pump: Turbo molecular pump with 280L/sec speed , PC/Printer, power fail kit and communication kit,NIST Library, 2002, 1177 Split/Splitless injector , CP624 Column , 60Mx 0.32 x 1.8um,Internal CI, External . CI, External EI,Electron Energy: -50eV Emission Current: Dual filament both in EI/CI,Mult-tasking Operational System, Multiple Method (upto 8) with protected memory, Central control of up to 7 headed zones( 6 plus column oven), -99 to 450 dg C, temp. programming column Oven (up to 7 ramps per methods.) Time-programmable injectors (up to 3) with Electronic flow/pneumatic controls. On/Off gas controls; up to 3 data channels. Ethernet communications interface with TCP/IP protocols for workstation control. Kindly suggest me which one to opt for.We are not concenred about the cost this time as we look for precision, reproducibility, endurance, performance and results rather than any thing else. With the hope that I would be suggested soon.Thanking you in anticipation, I remain Yours truly B B Misra Ph.D. working in plant metabolomics +91-9735444199(Mobile Number),India |

| Hi there! Mass specs are not easy to decide as usual, you need to grill them to get proper details. i can also suggest try contacting Agilent, they have launced a new GC MSMS @ ASMS. try seeing if they can help you. More vendors more you can get to know |

| ion traps are not really good MS/MS spectrometers for trace analysis... it is more dedicated for structures. For metabolomics purposes, mainly LC systems are recommended. Actually, for trace analysis, triple quadrupoles are the most versatile and sensitive systems. For manufacturers, most perfomant systems and also most expensive are : for GC-MS/MS : Agilent 7000A for LC-MS/MS : Waters Xevo TQ MS regards |

| By experience on Thermo Polaris Q (equivalent of ITQ), I can say : Excessive cost of Thermo GCs parts such as liners, septa, graphite ferrule for inlet liner! Time consuming and frequently septum replacement due to too high septum temperature even at lower inlet temp... huges phtalates bleedings. For MS, ion trap not recommended for you, external ion source needs daily cleaning even if you only work with standards, instability of ionisation conditions and in these conditions, if you inject 5 time the same standard sample, you get 5 different responses.
