Either you are reading abstracts or a newspaper article on the science section. The actual science---background, samples, methods, results, conclusions, discussions---is in scientific journals. So you should use the search engine for a database of scientific journals.
Like:
PubMED---> http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=PubMed
Blackwell Synergy ---> http://www.blackwell-synergy.com
Elsevier ---> http://www.elsevier.com/

Best tip is pick a great research university near you, and visit its library website and find a list of databases some will relate to liberal arts, politics, and others will be for all kinds of science fields.

For example HAM-TMC, in Houston TX list of databases on library site ---> http://www.library.tmc.edu/databases/search2.cfm
