Aluminum hydroxide (ATH) sometimes erroneously called Hydrate of alumina, is found in nature as the mineral gibbsite (also known as hydrargillite). Closely related are aluminium oxide hydroxide, AlO(OH), and aluminium oxide, Al2O3, differing only by loss of water. These compounds together are the major components of the aluminium ore bauxite. Freshly precipitated aluminium hydroxide forms gels, which is the basis for application of aluminium salts as flocculants in water purification. This gel crystallizes with time. Aluminium hydroxide gels can be dehydrated (e.g., with the utility of water-miscible non-aqueous solvents like ethanol) to form an amorphous aluminium hydroxide powder, which is readily soluble in acids.

Application:
1. Aluminum hydroxide can be used to produce aluminum chemicals. Major products include alum (aluminum sulfate), poly aluminum chloride (PAC), sodium aluminate, zeolites, aluminum fluoride.
2. A raw material in the manufacture of glass, glazes and frits.
3. Can be used as Aluminum Hydroxide flame retardant.
4. Al(OH)3 is a raw material in catalyst production, a flame retardant and smoke suppressant filler in plastics like: cables, rubber products and carpet backing.
5. a raw material for fertilizers, fiber cement board products.
6. It is also an extender and bodying agent in paper, solvent- and water-borne paints, UV curable coatings, inks, and adhesives.
7. It can be used as a polishing and cleansing agent, mould wash and separating agent, a filler of cast polymer products such as onyx and solid surfaces.

Activated Alumina
Molecular Formula: Al2O3
Activated alumina is manufactured from aluminum hydroxide by dehydroxylating it in a way that produces a highly porous material; this material can have a surface area significantly over 200 square metres/g. The compound is used as a Activated Alumina desiccant (to keep things dry by absorbing water from the air) and as a filter of fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water. It is made of aluminum oxide (aluminium oxide, alumina; Al2O3), the same chemical substance as sapphire and rubies (but without the impurities that give those gems their color). It has a very high surface-area-to-weight ratio. That means it has a lot of very small pores, almost like tunnels, that run throughout it.
