| A customer dropped off a fiberglass rod, which is supposed to contain either polyester or vinylester. The glass content is very high, probably 95% at least. Is there a method to determine if it is polyester or vinylester? Thanks, Dave |

I'm not sure how they cure vinylester but I see the base material is made by addition of acrylic acid to bisphenol A. Polyester is cured with styrene which can often be smelled on breaking a piece of the plastic. Another possible sniff test would be to cook a piece in caustic to hydrolyze then acidify with sulfuric acid to see if you can smell acrylic acid. I doubt if glass loading is 95% (except by weight) since that would make an awfully dry composite. Frank |
