| Thanks to all for their helpful comments in reply to my question. Since posting, I looked in Atkins' book Physical Chemistry (1979) to see what it says about adsorption. It distinguishes between physisorption and chemisorption and discusses them separately but gives greater weight to chemisorption, which is more important for catalysis. He doesn't mention chromatography at all, so I'm not sure whether chromatographic adsorbents work by physisorption or chemisorption. Likewise, Samsonov's book on his configurational model of matter only discusses adsorption in connection with catalysis. I'm a little surprised that applications to chromatography are omitted from Atkins' book. Is there another book that does study the behavior of adsorbents in chromatography at a theoretical level?
