There are numerous Pd catalyzed cross-coupling reactions which can be
used to synthesize biaryl systems. An example would be a Suzuki
coupling between m-bromophenol and benzeneboronic acid.

Bromophenol is pricey. To get a cheap production, I thought more in
lines of doing Heck with bromo or iodobenzene with cyclohexenone and
aromatizing the product by heating it with Pd/C or Pd/Al2O3 to 200C.
Since Pd/C is a catalyst useful for Heck, maybe one can do it all in
one pot - especially on industrial scale.

Also I have seen Heck with benzoic acid anhydride or benzoyl chloride
instead of iodobenzene. Even diazonium Heck should work, if one would
do it in 2 steps.
