Default Need something soluble in acetone...

I am working on a project to develop techniques for spray-coating a
fine layer of crystals on a surface, by first dissolving the
crystalline powder in acetone then spraying the acetone solution onto
the target surface.

I had intended to use salicylic acid as the representative material,
since it has good solubility in acetone, and I figured being aspirin,
it is relatively harmless to work with. However, when working with
the prototype device, inhaling the spray of salicylic acid in solution
is pretty nasty!

Can someone recommend to me a similar crystalline material with
similar solubility in acetone (say, something like 10 - 50 g solute
per 100 g acetone)? Ideally, something readily available and
innocuous to work with (like a common food additive would be great)!
I'll take any suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

*acetyl*salicylic acid is aspirin. Salicylic acid is toxic (as UA reminded
me). (If you smell vinegar don't take the aspirin.)

....

How about a resin of some type? They can form crystals, and I have used
acetone to dissolve it.

How about butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Nicely crystalline and
soluble in acetone, though to what extent I don't know.

Check the FDA GRAS list for other possibilities.

A spray of anything can be nasty, and the acetone fumes won't help
your liver much, either. You can build a simple spray hood from a
cardboard box, a 3 inch computer fan, a 12-volt transformer, and some
dryer vent ducting, the way I once did.

Cost you about $12, about 0.01% of the cost of a liver transplant.

I could work with 30% ozone in this box. (Just glad I wasn't at the
other end of the vent.)

You're confusing the threads on ozone and acetone.
Depending on what type of fan we're talking about,
sparking could ignite the acetone atmosphere.

That sounds good (I understand that BHT is used as a food additive),
but the MSDS says: "Cancer suspect agent. May cause reproductive
defects. May be harmful if swallowed. Eye, respiratory tract and skin
irritant."

There are some good leads there. Thanks for the pointer!

They weren't confused, but I should have explicitly mentioned using a
nonsparking induction motor, like a computer fan, to avoid ignition.
For that matter, doing it outdoors while sitting upwind is safer
still.

Yes; use at your own risk. I won't tell you to ignore the warnings,
but will only point out that most MSDSs sound pretty dire. This is
unfortunately counterproductive; the practice of attaching
scary-sounding warnings to any chemical which may possibly cause an
adverse effect has trivialized the entire MSDS concept. It has made
it very difficult to gauge how dangerous a chemical truly is from
reading the MSDS, at least for those not well acquainted with how the
documents read. Ditto for the warning labels on containers. I have
jars of washed beach sand carrying warnings which would make it seem
appallingly criminal to put the stuff in children's play boxes.

You could try to use g-hydroxy-butrylic acid or alum powder. They form
great crystals.

ANother solution may be malatic acid or ammonia salts
