What is iridium used for?

Seems quite dense (~22,000 kg/m**3), but
the only application reference I've heard about
is (or was) "iridium-tipped fountain pens."

Thanks!
Chris

I understand that it is easily wetted, hence the ballpoint
application. It is used in some catalysts.

There are a couple of sites that have thorough coverage of the
periodic table. Some have properties and uses intact. If you google
'periodic table', you should find them.

An astonishly small amount of iridium is produced every years, because
there are few bulk applications and because it is so bleedin' scarce.

Hi,

I've found these :-

making crucibles and apparatus for use at high temperatures
electrical contacts
hardening agent for platinum
it forms an alloy with osmium used for tipping pens and compass bearings
Pt/Ir sparkplugs, as used in the MG-F.

It is used in spelling bees. It alsow was used to name a failed satellite
system. It was also used to find out how dinosaurs died out.

You can kill dinosaurs with iridium? No wonder I had problems. I was
trying to use kryptonite.
