Combustion temperature of diamond

>>Set in the 1870s, the villain melts diamonds in crucibles over

I don't remember all the details. Some things were normal
for the 1870s, but other things, as far as I know, were
not.

1. The bad guy, Morgan Midas, was not wearing safety glasses. OK
2. They diamond melting lab did not have a fume hood. OK
3. Midas drank down the molten diamond with such alacrity it's
as if it was a Martini. That's probably OK on the assumption that
it's safe to drink molten diamond as long as you don't know the
actual temperature which might not have been to Midas in the 1870s.
However:
4. There was no olive or onion in the molten diamond, a whacky
slip up if you ask me.

(For those of you wondering, the Martini was invented in
1862 and originally called the Martinez.

And others.
