Interview Question - Too Tough? The following interview question (or something similar) will be aimed at a recent graduate ... is this too tough? The following reaction is depicted in SMILES strings. Please name: the starting material, product and reaction type. The reaction of O=C(OC)CCC(OC)=O and O=CC1=CC=CC=C1 in the presence of a strong base and suitable solvent gives OC(CC(C(OC)=O)=CC1=CC=CC=C1)=O. Darren. |
Interview Question - Too Tough? In article <<bo5uhi$36h$[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]>,> Darren Rhodes ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]) says... I'm not sure recent graduates will know what SMILES strings are (well, I didn't know what they really were until a year or so into my attempted Ph.D., anyway), but if you mean the structures represented by those strings then I guess it might be OK - the name of the product *might* be a bit testing ;). BTW, why don't you get OC(/C(CC(OC)=O)=C\C1=CC=CC=C1)=O (if you're having difficulties translating it back, let me know and I'll stick a picture up on some webspace) instead or as a by-product? (Or is that a follow-up question ;) ) Stephan -- Stephan Bird MChem(Hons) AMRSC Currently in Oxford, England |

Re: Interview Question - Too Tough? Lots of times in interviews they are not looking for the right answer (although that will never hurt) but they're looking to see how you think, or how you go about solving a hard problem. |
Re: Interview Question - Too Tough? When you go for interview that time prepared very well all the formula and mixer of organic chemistry and give answer very carefully. |
