The reason is that terms like "Grignard reaction" or "Evans aldol"
convey a whole lot of information to a chemist in a very succinct
package.

What about named laboratory apparatus and named "effects" in physics?
Buchner funnel, Bunsen burner,Dewar flask, Erlenmeyer flask,Liebig
condenser etc. etc. to name a few.

We named the various rain water collection areas in our plant after the
supervisors of those areas ...
Peter's Pond ... Lou's Lake ... Rog's River ...
And the loading locks ... What's Up Dock, Donald Dock and Daffy Dock ...

Maybe I'll name the O(1D) + CH4 reaction, the "Curl Reaction" when my boss
retires in 2005. Physical chemists need named reactions, too.

Sure. The trick, though, will be to get a few dozen eminent chemists
referring to the reaction by name.
